Studying galaxy clusters in formation with the GTC

报告题目:Studying galaxy clusters in formation with the GTC

报告摘要:In the hierarchical picture, the first major structures to form are the ones with the highest densities. Thus, by definition, the most massive single halos are always in galaxy overdensitites which are potential galaxy clusters in the local universe. The imprint of so-called galaxy protoclusters (clusters in formation) was actually already in place at z=6-8. However, only at redshift z=2-2.5 we can start to see the impact of large-scale structure on the formation and evolution of galaxies. Thus a detailed study of the progenitors of local galaxy clusters in the early Universe will give insight into the evolution and formation of galaxies, as at z=2 galaxy clusters start to virialize. Therefore, we are conducting observations with the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) of several large-scale structures from cosmic dawn to cosmic noon. We are using the multi-object spectrograph modes of the instruments OSIRIS (optical) and EMIR (near-infrared).  These observations will allow us to better constrain the assembly history of galaxy clusters themselves and to understand the role of environment in guiding galaxy evolution. Here I will present results of this research program and give a short overview of the GTC instrumentation.
