Abstract Cosmological dark matter N-body simulations are widely used to create mock-catalogues of galaxies. In this talk I review the main ideas and problems behind such simulations and show some results where Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6 galaxy catalog and simulated galaxy data are used to study the substructure of the dark matter halos, the distribution of subhalos inside main halos and the correspondence between dark matter halos and galaxies. The main assumption is that each subhalo contains a galaxy and the simple analytical equation can be used to assign luminosities for dark matter halos. By comparing the properties of galaxy groups in SDSS and simulations the hypothesis that galaxies are formed within large halos in a similar manner as subhalos are formed inside main halos can be tested.
