摘 要: Dust attenuation is the largest source of systematic uncertainty in measurements of star formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies. According to an energetic budget consideration, the effects of dust attenuation can be corrected by combining measurements of the dust-attenuated fluxes in the ultraviolet (UV) or visible with measurements of the dust emission in the infrared. We apply this energy balance argument to integrated measurements of two samples of nearby galaxies by combining UV, Ha or [OII] with continuum measurements in the infrared and radio, to derive attenuation-corrected star formation rates (SFRs). We find that our composite SFRs are tightly and linearly correlated with the attenuation-corrected SFRs derived from integrated emission-line spectra, over a wide range of SFRs and extinctions. We compare our calibrations with those in the literature to estimate the range of applicability and systematic reliability of these composite methods.
